Why do we avoid working on commission basis?
My brother and I are unreasonable people. It isn’t because we lack reasons. It is just that our reasoning doesn’t follow the conventional reasoning of today. Half of the reasons we do things the way we do fell out of fashion around the time of the industrial revolution. These reasons explain why we build the way we do. Why we use solid wood, traditional joinery, and hand tools. The other half of our reasons haven’t come into vogue yet. These reasons have to do with sustainability, creative freedom, and finding fulfillment within your craft and life. None of our reasons seem reasonable in the “customer know best” “rock-bottom-price” consumer oriented commercial sphere that most people are used to dealing in.
And because we are unreasonable people doing unreasonable things, it follows that our way of doing business is also unreasonable. In fact our business model is only a model in-so-far as it is a perfect model of how not to run a business. To save ourselves the embarrassment of having to explain our unreasonable reasons to our customers we prefer to keep customers as far away from our business as possible. Unfortunately, the craft of making furniture actually costs money to pursue. This is why, despite our best intentions and efforts, we do actually manage sell furniture (albiet, to likeminded unreasonable people)--I know, it surprises us when it happens too. As a matter of fact, we have so far managed to be lucky enough to find a steady trickle of customers as differently reasoned as we are to support our furniture making habit.
If you believe that you are as differently reasoned as we are, perhaps we could make a piece of furniture for you. This means that you value handwork, original and thoughtful design, and sustainability in the items you live with. And you also respect our mastery of our craft and understand that we know better then you when it comes to furniture. We aren’t interested in slapping together plywood boxes or being handed a blueprint or set of plans for us to execute blindly. Our top priority is to work in a way which brings us satisfaction and to build pieces we think are beautiful. We try not to let money and clients get in the way of how we do business.
